Influencing
Your
Photographic Eye
Two Callas, by
Imogen Cunningham
Introduction
You
have spent this year learning about how to create wonderful photographs,
and many of you have created your own distinct style. Now it's your
mission to continue your growth as a photographer and artist by allowing
someone else's work, processes, and knowledge to influence your own style. This will,
of course, require some research!
Nevada Falls, Ansel Adams
Task
Using
your knowledge of photography and the World Wide Web, your duty is to
select a photographer from the list provided below. Be sure to look
at the list and the selections of representative works provided before
you select your photographer.
From
your research you will create a brief biography. To illustrate your
biography you will need to take a series of photographs in the style
of the photographer you have selected. The images you choose to create
should speak to the viewer about who you are with influence from the
style of your chosen photographer. Your book should contain a minimum
of five 5x7 photographs.
Later
you will combine your biography with your photographs to create a book.
Use your imagination please! Your biography can rhyme, be written in
prose, or iambic pentameter. Use the computer to create interesting layouts
and find a font that adds to the style of your writing and photographs.
When
writing your biography, be sure to answer the following questions about
yourself, and the photographer you have selected :
What were major events
in the photographer's life?
How was the photographer
educated in photography?
What were the major influences
in the photographer's work?
What is the importance
of the photographer's work?
What were the major advances
that photographer made to change photography as it was known?
What sets this photographer
apart from other photographers and artists?
How has that photographer
influenced you and your work?
What are the similarities
between yourself and the photographer, both in life events and artistic
style?
What has drawn you to
select this photographer?
