"The year is 2073 A.D. and the President of the United Nations has drafted you (because of your famous mathematical brain) to join a team of mathematical consultants to travel to Zonetia, a recently discovered planet in a neighboring galaxy. King Zoppo (he's the green guy on the Home page) of the Zony Tribe on Zonetia insists that his primitive society cannot begin to make technological advancements unless they have guidance to develop a brand-new base 4 number system to fit the Zonies' two-fingered hands. That's right; they have two hands just like you, but each hand has only two fingers. Therefore, they need a specially-tailored number system with only four symbols. In order to best preserve Zony culture, King Zoppo, in his wisdom, has requested that the new number symbols be different than those used on Earth."
Questions: Why does our number system have place value? and How does place value work?

"Your family may or may not eat meat loaf. Many people love this traditional dish, but others have been known to hate it! Whether you like a certain food or not, it is wise to check on whether it is healthy for you. It would be terrible if something you liked and ate often wasn't good for you. But on the other hand if you don't like it, then maybe you wouldn't have to eat it if it wasn't healthy...
Your job will be to determine whether meat loaf is a healthy food or a dangerous food that could make you ill unless you eat it only occasionally or start making it differently. You will use health research and science, and some math to make your case."

"OK, here's the deal." The gruff inspector snarled as he spoke to your team of detectives. "For a long time people have been blamin' things on the moon! People claim to be crazy because of it, lovers claim to be under its spell, and even hospitals blame the full moon for loaded emergency rooms." "Yeah!", one of the newer members of your team replied flippantly, "So what's new?" The rest of your team let out a low sigh. Now the whole team was in for it! "I'll tell you what's new, Mr. Smartypants," the inspector glowered at each of you slowly, "Now some nutcase has brought charges against the moon for causing the tides! And, its your job to bring me proof one way or another!" The inspector turned back toward his desk and we thought he was through. He wasn't! He turned back to your team, pointed his finger at you and said, "And you only have two weeks to solve the case. Now get started!"
Questions: Can you find a pattern that will convince the jury that the moon is responsible for the tides? If the moon is guilty, does it have an accomplice which contributes to causing the tides?
